What is Insomnia

If you have insomnia, you know it. But there are different types and different causes, so it's helpful to have all the terms defined first before we go into insomnia relief tips.

What is insomnia?
Insomnia is when you are unable to get the restful sleep that you need. This might be because you have trouble falling asleep, or you wake up too early. If you are tossing and turning all night, that is also insomnia.

What are the kinds of insomnia?

There are three different types.

Transient. Almost everyone experiences this short term type of insomnia. If you are having trouble sleeping for one night or even a few weeks, this is what you have.

Intermittent. If it happens infrequently, it is intermittent.

Chronic. The worst. It happens almost every night for over a month.

Causes

One reason it can be so hard to cure is that there are so many possible causes. This is not an exhaustive list, but here are some common reasons. Stress, caffeine, depression, anxiety, jet lag, illness, and prescription medication side-effects.

Drinking Herbal Tea

First, a disclaimer. If you are seriously ill or are on a prescription medication, do not  start taking herbs before you discuss it with your doctor.

Having said that, I find that having a cup of chamomile in the evenings help me sleep at night. Now, I know that when I am having trouble falling asleep, it is because I am stressed or anxious about something. Because of that, having a cup of tea to calm my nerves helps me relax and have a restful night.

Now, I prefer tea for a couple of reasons. One, I like the taste of tea. Two, I don't think there is enough regulation in the supplement industry. With tea I can use just the right amount of a certain herb or buy from a tea company that I trust. Three, I feel that an herbal infusion is more effective than a pill.

Listed below are some of my favorite teas on Amazon. You can probably find them in your local store, but I have found it is much cheaper to shop online. This is especially true if the item has subscribe and save.

Sleepy Herbal Teas

Bigelow Cozy Chamomile Herbal Tea, 20-Count Boxes (Pack of 6)
Chamomile is one of my favorite ways to relax. It's cheap and has a mellow flavor that I really enjoy.
Amazon Price: $15.42
List Price: $19.20
Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Extra Tea, 20-Count Tea Bags (Pack of 6)
If you need something stronger than chamomile, I highly recommend this. It is a blend of valerian and chamomile, along with spearmint, West Indian lemongrass, hawthorn berries and orange blossoms. If you've tried other sleepy teas before and have been disappointed, this one is worth trying. It is the valerian that makes it extra.
Amazon Price: $24.47
List Price: $31.32
Yogi St. John's Wort Blues Away, Herbal Tea Supplement, 16-Count Tea Bags (Pack of 6)
I love this tea so much! It isn't a sleepy time tea, but it is good to take if you are stressed and anxious throughout the day. I find that it does help keep me calm (I am prone to anxiety). So, if your sleep troubles are caused by a stressful period in your life, you may benefit from this tea.
Amazon Price: $19.44
List Price: $28.13

This would be a better hub if you gave more possible solutions for insomnia.

Keep trying - you will improve as a hub writer.

Thanks. It is still pretty new and I'm hoping to add more to it this week.
